As you might (or might not) know, before starting X-Men: Forever, Chris Claremont spent about two years on the franchise very close to X-Men - the Exiles. It got cancelled just the same as Forever, spanning 35 issues (10 "old" Exiles, 5 Die by the Sword, 18+1 New Exiles, 1 Sword of the Braddocks epilogue).

Have yet to read it, but will likely get around to it eventually.

You have my recommendations then, if it means anything I was a little wary at first, thinking "Oh, it's Claremont alright, but I'd rather have him writing the X-Men", but to my surprise, the Exiles and X-Men have a lot in common. It's a pity only the first two truly New Exiles story arch are written to the fullest before the series shutdown happened. I loved that little "friendly" nudge to Reg Hudlin in the second issue.

Some of New Exiles was amazing, specifically the Sage back-up strips (#13-17) and the Chris Claremont / Tim Seeley collaboration.
And some of it was awful.
I think if the series had Seeley from the start and some ideas were ditched, and if we had more character back-story, NXL would have been an awesome series all around.
