Dunno why, but the final issue was a bit of a disappointment. It felt more like a character-driven pause between major issues, not a proper series finale.

That's exactly what I liked about it.

I thought it was great, too. I can't believe the series ended with two of its main storylines left unresolved: burnout and the Consortium.
Not to mention Mr. Sinister and the Nate/Robyn cliffhanger. And Kurt's fate.
Marvel should have let Chris finish the 24 issues that they promised us. Or at least let him do another "Giant-Sized" issue to tie some of the loose ends. It stinks. they never even tried to promote it properly.
Also, my letter to Axel Alonso came back, anyone else had this problem? It didn't happen with the rest of the staff.

I think that several minis or old-school Marvel graphic novels would be needed to do the job properly. Haven't tried Alex Alonso yet. Will let you know.

Well, don't get me wrong, the character writing was exceptional, felt like the good oldschools, but seeing all those loose ends? Consortium, Sinister, burnout, Wolverine, Mariko, technically even the Perfect Storm storyline wasn't finished. A very good issue in and of itself, but when I realize there's nothing more coming after that, it really leaves me quite irked.
Might be a pessimist, but I doubt they'll give Claremont the series back to finish. We (meaning local fanbase) wrote our share of letters to both Quesada (back when he still was at the helm) and Alonso for the good measure, but I still think it's gonna end up unresolved.
Even though, it's admittedly better than the New Exiles ending with all those sudden cut-offs.

There's always a chance; I think fans should keep writing to Marvel to remind them that people still want to see more of XMF.
They also need to resolve the Black Magik story.
