I'm re-reading it, and it's so good. The writing and art were excellent. These are definitely the real X-Men. Each character has their own unique voice and style. And the issues are embedded with interesting sub-lots and mysteries. The Mr. Sinister / Nate one for instance, so much promise there.
It stinks that it was cancelled, I'm sure they could have afforded to let it continue. Like Brevoort reminded us, the original X-Men series was cancelled in the 70s and published re-prints instead of new stories for several years -- can you imagine if the book had been cancelled completely? Can you imagine the industry today without the X-Men? What if XMF could become big, too?
I don't think Marvel will bring XMF back if readers won't ask them to. They'll simply forget about it and move on to new projects. I intended to remind Marvel about XMF from time to time. Not necessarily always with long letters -- quick short notes are good, too. Just to remind them that we still want more, or at least a proper ending.

I have the first volume of XMF 2 on order. Am expecting it to arrive later this week.
I'm not sure XMF could ever become big. It's too niche, and requires too much background reading. Ideally, I'd like to see Marvel re-launch the series alongside some kind of cyclopedia of the original Claremont run. That way, new XMF readers could just check the cyclopedia if they come across a refernce they aren't familiar with, with the option of picking up the original Claremont run if they want to.
Of course, an alternative to waiting on Marvel is to create such a cyclopedia for ourselves and direct new readers to it whenever the opportunity presents itself.

I think XMF is more accessible to new readers, for at least two reasons --
1. XMF actually requires less background reading -- the cut-off is #279 (1991) whereas the "mainstream" Uncanny X-Men already reached #533-! That's much more material to catch up on. Not to mention all the new core books and "satellite" series and crossovers that have been published between #279 and #533. 2. XMF is easy to follow (and buy) as it is a single book. If you want to follow, say, current Uncanny X-Men, then you have to buy X-Men Legacy, X-Men, New Mutants, X-23, Wolverine, and all sort of crossover one-shots, mini-series and tie-ins -- just to get one story. At the moment it's "Age of X" (whatever that is.)
They can't predict what would become big, they probably never expected X-Men to explode the way it did. Though I'm sure XMF would have actually sold more if readers didn't have bias against Claremont. Because this was really a great book, with great stories and art.

I think the series as a whole was great but I had a feeling it wasn't going to last. First, the book would never get the type of support Uncanny does. Uncanny is the main Xbook that goes back to issue #1 from 1963. I dont think Marvel would want to hurt the sales of a "mainstream" comic. The second problem in my opinion is the way the issues seemed hurried. I think Claremont wanted to make sure his old ideas were used so he could finally move forward with new stories. I also think the editors killed Claremonts "wordiness," which was a mistake. I love his wordiness. The art wasn't too good in a lot of the issues as well. I think Claremont did mess up when he killed Wolverine. His Wolverine is the absolute best as are all the X-Men when he writes them. His Wolverine would have brought on more readers I think. He could have killed him off eventually but I just think it hurt XMF by killing him off right away. I just hope Claremont gets to pick up where he left off......again.

I actually liked the pacing in this one. I loved the series before, but I appreciate the writing even more now, with all the issues available.

Well, I suppose we can stop writing to Marvel about relaunch of Forever. CC himself stated in his interview for NonCanonical that "X-Men Forever's dead"
